Trailer requirements

Just as with a motorcycle, a trailer must also meet a few technical and usage requirements. If a trailer does not meet these requirements, you may not ride with it.

Required lighting trailer

The required lighting on a motorcycle trailer is not a part of the CBR exam and will therefore not be discussed.

You do need to know that the colours of the lighting present on the trailer must be the same as on the motorcycle. If you want to ride yourself with a trailer behind the motorcycle, it is wise to check the rules carefully though. Be well informed when buying a trailer by someone with expertise.

General requirements trailer

Trailers behind a motorcycle must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be fitted with the possibility of attaching a number plate at the rear.
  • The number plate lighting must be white and may not radiate light backwards.
  • They must be fitted with two red retroreflectors on the rear.
  • They must be fitted with at least one amber yellow retroreflector on both sides of the trailer.

Wheels, axles and tyres

Only single-axle trailers may be used behind a motorcycle. With a one-wheeled trailer, the wheel must be mounted in such a way that it can only rotate about its own horizontal axis. The wheels of these trailers must have air tyres.

Measurements

A trailer behind a motorcycle must meet the following requirements when coupled:

  • The trailer may not be wider than 2 metres, including load.
  • The trailer may not be higher than 1 metre, including load.
  • The total mass of the trailer may not be more than half of the unladen weight of the towing motorcycle.
  • The distance between the rear axle of the towing motorcycle up to the rear side of the trailer may not be longer than 2.5 metres, including load.
