Special roads

While driving on public roads, you will encounter different roads. Some are wider and others narrower. In addition you can and may drive much faster on one road than on another. You are not allowed to enter a few of these roads, such as the autoweg and motorway, with your moped. You are only allowed to enter these roads with a motor vehicle that can and is allowed to go at least 50 km/h (autoweg) or 60 km/h (motorway). However, it may happen that you must cross an autoweg. Keep in mind the high speed of the intersecting vehicles.

Road sections you will encounter more often are the erf and roundabouts.

Erf

It is often thought that pedestrians always have right of way on an erf. This is not the case. Within an erf, the same priority rules apply as on normal roads.

At an erf, the entrances and exits are usually designed as an entrance or exit construction. When entering an entrance construction or exiting an exit construction, drivers must give way to all other traffic. This also includes pedestrians. So, this rule has less to do with the erf itself and more to do with the exit construction.

Within an erf, there are a few other rules:

  • Pedestrians may use the entire width of the road. So, they do not have to walk on the side of the road. This is because there are no pavements within an erf.
  • The speed limit for drivers is 15 km/h.
  • Drivers of brommobielen are only allowed to park in spaces that are designated as parking spaces. This is usually indicated by a sign with a P, or by a P on the road surface. Parking outside these spaces is therefore not allowed. A moped, speed pedelec or snorfiets may be placed anywhere within an erf, but it may not cause any hindrance.
