Use of mobile communication devices
Mobile telecommunication device is a difficult word for, for example, mobile telephones. Holding these devices while operating a vehicle is prohibited.
This therefore does not only apply to making a call. Reading or sending text messages while riding, or scrolling through a music playlist, is also not allowed if you are holding your phone while doing so.
On a normal motorcycle, holding a phone will be quite rare. Though, motorcyclists sometimes have a mobile phone mounted on the handlebar, or communication devices that are concealed in the helmet are used. This is legally allowed but can be just as distracting. So, handle it wisely. For example, only set your navigational system when you are standing still.

Some motorcyclists have a communication device in their helmet. Keep in mind that this can also be distracting.

If you use the navigation on your motorcycle, only control it when you are standing still.
Distractions
Using a phone while driving leads to several dozen casualties a year, according to Safe Traffic Netherlands’ estimate. The risk of an accident doubles when you are on the phone, even if this is done handsfree. While typing or reading a message, this risk is 6 times as big.
All this is because phone distractions have a negative influence on:
- your ability to perceive;
- your ability to react;
- vehicle control;
- your judgement.
All this not only applies to mobile phones. But also to setting your navigational system while riding, using a music medium (iPod, MP3-player), et cetera. Never do any of this this while riding.
