Meaning per category – C
These signs indicate closures (no entry), one-way streets (entry from one direction only), and rush hour lane openings.

C-1
Closed in both directions to vehicles, horse riders, and handlers of
horses and livestock. Pedestrians are allowed here.

C-2
One-way street. Closed in this direction to vehicles, horse riders, and handlers of horses and livestock. Pedestrians are allowed from this side.

The C-2 sign is also placed at the end of motorway or autoweg
deceleration lanes in the opposite direction.
This sign is always accompanied by a ‘ga terug’ (go back)
supplementary plate to prevent motorists driving in the wrong
direction.

C-3
One-way street that can be entered from this side only. If a C-2 sign is seen at the beginning of the road, this sign will be at the end.

C-4
One-way street on the right. This sign is usually seen at T-junctions. You must turn right.

C-5
Entry from both sides allowed. This sign is seen near roads that appear to be one-way, such as parallel roads alongside main roads, and indicates that they are not one-way.
The C-6 to C-22 signs are the same as the C-1 sign, but specific to a particular group. The group to which this sign applies is indicated by an image, numbers, or letters stated on the sign.

C-22 Zero-emission and environmental zone
Signs that indicate a zero-emission or environmental zone are accompanied by a supplementary plate that states whether certain (diesel) vehicles are allowed. This depends on the emission class under which the vehicle falls. The higher the emission class, the cleaner the vehicle. The vehicle’s emission class is stated in the national vehicle register.

Closure signs can also be used as zone signs. These signs remain valid until the end zone sign.


The last signs in the C series are not closure signs. This series also includes signs regarding the opening of extra lanes (rush hour lanes).

Closure signs may also be accompanied by supplementary plates indicating any applicable clarifications or restrictions.
- Destination traffic
Drivers whose destination is on a road they are prohibited from entering due to a closure sign and cannot be reached via any other route. Public buses are always classed as destination traffic.

C-6 exempt destination traffic
The supplementary plate indicates that destination traffic may always drive into this road. Even if they fall into the category indicated on the sign above: motor vehicles on more than two wheels.

C-12 during certain hours
The supplementary plate indicates at which times the top sign
applies. The road is open to all traffic outside these times. Also for the categories indicated on the sign above: all motor vehicles.
