There are a number of differences between the mandatory cycle path (sign G-11) and the non-mandatory cycle path (G-13):

  • If there is a mandatory cycle path, cyclists and snorfietsers may not use the carriageway. They have to ride on the cycle path.
  • If there is a non-mandatory cycle path, cyclists may choose between the cycle path and the carriageway.
  • Snorfietsers are only allowed to use a non-mandatory cycle path if they have their combustion engine switched off. An electric motor may be switched on.

A number of signs in this category can also be used as zone signs. These signs remain valid until the end zone sign.
