Use of lighting when stopped
The use of lighting may not only be mandatory while driving. In some cases it is also compulsory to use sidelights in combination with a rear light when stationary.
Lighting while stopped is mandatory for motor vehicles with more than two wheels, and trailers, when:
- they are stopped on a carriageway outside a built-up area during the day in poor visibility and at night;
- they are stopped in a parking lane, a car park, hard shoulder, or refuge that lies directly alongside an autoweg or motorway during the day in poor visibility and at night.

Parking lights
Most passenger cars have a special lighting mode, the parking position. You can usually choose to only switch on the lighting on one side, for example only on the left if you park to the right of the road.
For narrower trailers without front sidelights, white retro-reflectors at the front and rear lights are sufficient.

A passenger car parked on the carriageway outside a built-up area must have sidelights and rear lights on.
